2014 LA Decom Event Information
~)'(~ Annual Los Angeles Burning Man
Decompression Arts and Music Celebration ~)'(~
Dear LA Burner Community,
There will not be an LA Decom this year. We are officially taking the year off.
We honestly and very sincerely tried. The park is closed for renovation (this we knew a year ago). We found a new location that we were very excited about but then management changed and so did the terms of the agreement making the location no longer perfect for our event. So we went on the search for a new location. For months, we made numerous phone calls to venues, talked to city officials, and went location scouting. And we did find a wonderful location right in downtown LA. But the date when we want to use it, backs up to another production already there shooting. It is a less than ideal situation that could easily be disastrous for us if that production runs late by one day. And it probably will.
So the bottom line…We’re tired. Exhausted really. And we honestly need to take a year off from producing this event. And weknow many on the team feel the same way. At the Town hall meeting in February several theme camp and art installation leads expressed similar feelings about taking a year off. So we are throwing in the towel and finally listening to you and probably also the universal playa dust. It is time to take a break.
We highly encourage your participation in San Francisco Decompression October 12th www.burningman.com/blackrockcity_yearround/special_events/decompression/decom2014.html and YOUtopia in San Diego October 16-19. http://sdyoutopia.com
Locally, we have monthly Burner Meet ups the first week of every month. Wednesday at Barbara’s at the Brewery in Downtown LA, Thursday at Roosterfish in Venice, and Sunday at The Other Door in North Hollywood.
December will bring the White Blissmas Charity Ball and March is BEquinox.
Thank you for your participation and contributions to the 12 years of LA Decom. We will come back in 2015 for our 13th year rested up and stronger. Ready to burn brightly and shine on!

IMPORTANT LA DECOM BURN INFO
SPECIAL EDITION: “SERAPHIM: THE SPIRIT OF UNIFICATION” TO SURVIVE DECOMPRESSION THROUGH NO FAULT OF OUR OWN
As the Los Angeles Burning Man community prepares for its annual Decompression, organizers have joined the Los Angeles Fire Department in calling off the art burn. “Seraphim: The Spirit of Unification” was set to burn at 2:00 am, with the event going all night for the first time. It was the first time an actual burn had been planned for the event, now in its tenth year.
“The Los Angeles Fire Department is absolutely right on this. It’s been way too dry and way too hot. It would be irresponsible and unsafe to burn under these conditions,” said Athena Demos, producer of the 10th Annual Los Angeles Decompression Arts and Music Celebration. The event takes place in LA State Historic Park on October 13th, starting at 1:00 pm. It concludes at dawn the following day. “We are still taking this event till dawn.”
Plans currently call for the art piece to be installed at the park on Sunday, October 7th. Starting the next day, artists and members of diverse Los Angeles communities will be invited to make art together at the base of the installation. Materials will be free, and Burning Man artists will be on hand to collaborate, teach, learn, and make friends with anyone interested. Hours will be 3:30 pm to sunset Monday – Friday.
All visitors will also be invited to decorate a board for nailing on to the art piece. People often leave personal messages, resolutions, and memorials on the piece, using it much like the Temple at Burning Man. At the end of Decompression, Seraphim will be dismantled and stored until conditions improve and a suitable place is found for the eventual burn.
“The silver linings here are that we get a chance to demonstrate our complete devotion to safety and to cooperation with the LA Fire Department. Also, we have another reason to come together in a few weeks or months to have our burn,” Demos said.
The rest of the day will feature musical stages, plenty of art, food, and thousands of “burners” and neighbors enjoying the annual event. It will take place at the LA State Historic Park (1245 N. Spring St, Los Angeles, CA, 90012).
